That's absolutely beautiful! Why, oh why can't I be absurdly wealthy and able to afford things like this!?!

Yes. Despite my mom's claims about my rambunctiousness and carelessness around the nicer items in the house, here is the actual reason that we can't have nice things:

Just wait till you have your own house. You'll find yourself in a position where you're making more money than you ever have in your entire life.....and yet some how have less of it at the end of the month.

Oh yeah, preaching to the choir. I probably should've phrased that first post in the past tense. Now I have a house, student loans in repayment, a divorce, child support, and a new wife. But at least after everyone else has laid their claims to the money I make, I still have some left to spend on something I do enjoy:

Ouch on the divorce and child support, I've just got the car not for the fiancee's new car, house payment, and associated bills, and then putting away money for the wedding. Hoping to have money to play with after the wedding is over and savings can go towards other stuff.

Saving for a wedding is an exercise in self control, however weddings are nearly universally profitable endeavors for the bride and groom! A $15,000 wedding can see upwards of $25,000 in fabulous cash and prizes, LOL. Our western culture is weird that way.

And yeah, having that sweet nest egg right after the cards are opened is very, very nice.

As for the divorce, meh, it can be expensive, but under the right circumstances you can divide things pretty equally. Also, unless there is something to show the spouse gave up gainful employment at the request of the husband, alimony is nearly non-existant for all but the richest of families. Child support is a killer, but even then, that money would get spent on the kids, whether directly or otherwise. So it's really a wash. In the end, kids are expensive no matter what the circumstances are.

If I lived in Silicon Valley and could program my own inane, nearly worthless App, the tech bros and VCs would give me every penny I needed for a Zagato TZ3. That's how you get the nice things in this new economy.

Yeah, that's what I hear about weddings, and it's also pretty awesome that I'm in a position where my folks are picking up the tab for our honemoon, and are sending us to a resort on St Lucia, which should be pretty kick ass.

Fair enough on the child support being something you'd be contributing anyways, I was more just thinking about it being a court ordered thing. Also, yeah kids are definitely expensive, it's part of why I'm in no hurry to have then right now.

I'm a professional animator, so the chances of me getting rich plying my trade are pretty slim regardless of where I live. I do have steady employment though, and it pays well enough for me to live comfortably and the benefits are nice too. The trade off is that I get to work with some pretty awesome stuff and get paid to do something I love, which is a trade off I'll take. I may never get to drive or own something as rare as a Zagato TZ3, but on occasion I do luck into situations where I get a chance to drive some very fun stuff....like a Caterham with a 2.0L duratec under the hood.

Fun > Exclusive. Always!

And yes, doing what you love is infinitely more likely to lead to success than doing something you think will make you rich. No one, for example, actually loves finance. Which is why that field is filled with self-loathing douchebro alcoholics. Because it's the only way to make yourself trudge into that finance tower block each morning. Me, I love cars. So I found a way to manage a dealership (since I studied management and have no technical expertise to speak of). Maybe someday it will become managing a racing team or even league. I'm 32, I have a LOT of time ahead.

Good for you for following a passion. A lot of soon-to-be college grads are getting that advice across the country, but will either misconstrue that as "try to make money" or will sort of fall into a job at a car rental counter. Someone really needs to explain to the young'ns that "pursuing your passion" means hard work, trials/tribulations, and a dogged determination, all of which make landing that first gig so sweet.

Congrats on your upcoming nuptials! I myself am getting remarried in Mexico at the end of this year! Pretty sure I got it right the second time.

Oh yeah it is, and that's something that took me a while to figure out myself as well. Lets just say that there is a reason that I graduated HS at the same time as my cousin, but didn't get my BFA untill the same year he graduated med school :-/ That said, it's been one long learning experience, and I wouldn't change a single thing thus far.....other than maybe a few hangovers. But yeah it's definitely much better to be doing something you actually enjoy rather than just what will make you the most money, but the old axiom about if you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life? Yeah that's complete horse shit. I generally love my job, and what I do, but it's still work, there are still days I want to stab clients in he face, or throw my computer out a window, or tell my boss to make up his damn mind. The difference is, I don't dread coming into the office each morning, and I look forward to more than just the paycheck and vacation here....though I'm quite fond of those too :D

Congrats on the 2nd marriage btw! A destination wedding would be awesome....but I'm fairly sure that both families would kill us if we tried that since a good number wouldn't be able to make it. Ah well, that's what the Honeymoon is for!

Yup. If it were fun it'd be called a hobby and we wouldn't get paid. Work is work, but work you like is a special kind of reward. For me it's not just the excitement of being in the industry or the thrill of the negotiation (I know it sound weird, but I also enjoy going to the dentist, so there's that), but also being around people who mostly know and love cars like I do. And access to the tech's, their knowledge, and their tools. This has afforded me a new hobby which I will soon begin, making bierkistes mit motoren .

2nd Marriage destination wedding was my fiance's choice, which I was a huge fan of. She's not a big "look-at-me" Wedding person, so a small 40-50 person destination was the way to go for us. Mexico in December isn't a bad proposition, either, because all-you-can-drink. The best part of your honeymoon will be NOT worrying about stuff for your wedding, LOL. Also the beaches in the Caribbean.
